5 Reasons Your Stream is Buffering (And How to Fix It)
There is nothing worse than a listener tuning into your station, only to hear silence… followed by a skip… followed by silence.
Buffering kills audience growth. In fact, studies show that listeners will abandon a stream after just 3 buffer events.
If you are struggling with a stuttering stream on AzuraCast, CentovaCast, or MediaCP, it usually boils down to one of these five common issues. Here is how to diagnose and fix them.
1. Your Bitrate is Too High for Your Upload Speed
This is the #1 cause of buffering. Many broadcasters try to stream at 320kbps (audio) or 6000kbps (video) when their internet connection simply cannot handle the consistent upload speed.
The Fix:
- Audio: Lower your bitrate to 128kbps MP3 or switch to 64kbps AAC+. AAC+ sounds just as good as MP3 but uses half the data.
- Video: If you are on a standard home connection, cap your video bitrate at 2500kbps to 4000kbps (720p).
2. You Are Using the Wrong Keyframe Interval (Video Only)
If you stream video using OBS Studio to Flussonic or MediaCP, this setting is critical. Streaming servers require a steady flow of “Keyframes” (full images) to keep the video in sync.
If your Keyframe Interval is set to “Auto” or “0,” players (especially on iPhones) will struggle to decode the video, causing constant loading spinners.
The Fix: Open OBS Studio > Settings > Output. Ensure Keyframe Interval is set specifically to 2 seconds.

3. Your Encoder Software is Fighting Your CPU
Are you running RadioBOSS, a web browser, and Photoshop all at the same time on the streaming PC? If your CPU usage hits 100%, your computer will prioritize keeping Windows alive over sending your stream data.
The Fix:
- Check your Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
- If usage is high, switch your encoder preset to “Ultrafast” in OBS, or close background apps.
- Pro Tip: Use a dedicated server for your station automation so your home PC doesn’t matter.
4. Network Jitter (Wi-Fi vs. Ethernet)
Speed tests lie. You might have “100 Mbps” download speed, but live streaming requires a stable upload connection. Wi-Fi signals fluctuate (jitter) whenever a microwave runs or a phone connects to the network.
The Fix: Always, always use a wired Ethernet cable (CAT6). If you must use Wi-Fi, ensure you are on the 5GHz band and sitting near the router.
5. Your Server is Too Far Away
Physics matters. If you are in London and your streaming server is in Los Angeles, your data has to travel halfway around the world. Every hop adds “latency” and potential packet loss.
The Fix: Choose a hosting provider with a high-performance network. At AZ-StreamingServer, our infrastructure is optimized specifically for media delivery, ensuring the shortest path between you and your listeners.
Conclusion: Stability > Quality
Listeners would rather hear a stable 128kbps stream than a 320kbps stream that cuts out every 10 seconds. Start with lower settings and work your way up.
